Houston Astros star Jose Altuve was apparently injured after a terrifying HBP while playing for Venezuela against Team USA in the World Baseball Classic.

The World Baseball Classic has been embraced as a thrilling tournament by fans all over the world. Unfortunately, it has also come under criticism because of injuries to star players with MLB Opening Day inching ever closer.

On Saturday night, it was the Astros’ turn to worry over one of their stats after Jose Altuve was hit by a pitch.

Houston’s second baseman was playing for Venezuala against the United States when Daniel Bard sent a pitch way inside. It hit Altuve on the wrist and sent him to the deck.

Altuve looked like he was in serious pain as he walked to the dugout.

The HBP loaded the bases for Venzuela, who trailed 5-2. Things quickly went down hill for Team USA as Bard stayed on the mound and threw a wild pitch, allowing the opposition to score a run. They’d take a 6-5 lead before the inning was up.

Astros fans, whether they’re rooting for Team USA or Venezuela, will only have thoughts for Altuve for now. The eight-time All-Star has led Houston to two World Series championships and he’s expected to continue to drive them to glory in 2023.

An injury before the season begins is the last thing the Astros wanted from his trip to the WBC.

The Mets have already faced the worst-case WBC injury scenario. Closer Edwin Diaz suffered a season-ending injury while celebrating Puerto Rico’s victory over the Dominican Republic.

That injury prompted an onslaught of frustration from fans who view the WBC as a pointless tournament not worth the risk of injury. However, MLB stars like Mookie Betts and Mike Trout hit back to defend the tournament.
