Mexican Gulf drug cartel turns in own members over US kidnappings

A Mexican drug cartel has handed over gang members it claims were responsible for the kidnapping of four Americans and issued an apology for their “lack of discipline”.

The five suspects, who are said to have shot dead two of the victims as well as a Mexican woman caught up in the gunfire, were left tied up in a vehicle along with a handwritten note.

A photograph published in local media on Thursday showed the suspects lying face down on the pavement next to the letter purportedly from the Scorpion faction of the Gulf Cartel, which dominates Tamaulipas state. It claimed the gang members had broken rules about “respecting the life and wellbeing of the innocent”.
