Syracuse basketball moves into ‘next generation’ of ACC hoops as Jim Boeheim exits (what they’re saying)
Jim Boeheim #JimBoeheim
Syracuse, N.Y. — After 47 years, Jim Boeheim’s reign over Syracuse men’s basketball is over.
The university announced Wednesday evening that associate head coach and alum Adrian Autry will take over as Orange head coach as Boeheim steps down.
Boeheim’s all-time head coaching record at Syracuse is cemented at 1,015-441. That does not include 101 wins vacated due to NCAA violations.
The Orange lost its first game of the 2023 ACC Tournament 77-74 against Wake Forest when Demon Deacons guard Daivien Williamson sank a triple for the win with seconds left.
Following the game, Boeheim spoke cryptically about his future with the program but seemed to imply he was retiring. Just hours later, it was announced formally that he was done.
Here’s what social media is saying about the end of the longest coaching tenure in Syracuse basketball history.
Coach Boeheim will always be the real Mayor of this town. His legacy on and off the court is unmatched, from 5 Final Fours and a National Title in 2003 to the generosity of the Jim & Julie Boeheim Foundation. The City of Syracuse is a better place because of him. Thanks, Coach.🍊

when you retire you want to make sure everybody’s last thought of you to be “wow that was annoying and oddly combative” https://t.co/UbU91hlXIm

Just got a picture text from a guy from. 5-Star Camp back in 1989. Tolentine Star Adrian Autry later at Syracuse and Jerry Wainwright. Behind them in middle is guess who? pic.twitter.com/IK6YOv1eKe

Proud is an understatement! Growing up with a front row seat to watch you do what you love has given me memories to last a lifetime. You gave everything you had to the University and City of Syracuse from the moment you stepped on campus as a teenager all the way up until today.… https://t.co/DhhmdkXRZ7 pic.twitter.com/jR25XxKyvF

My favorite personal Boeheim story. He told me and another reporter to “go get our Pulitzer somewhere else” after a loss at Marquette 10 years ago.
The next day he called me up to apologize.
He was emotional, he could be tough — but there was absolutely no bullshit with… https://t.co/tnf867B1zU

It’s sad that Boeheim couldn’t see how Syracuse had slipped, say goodbye gracefully before it got worse and hand the program over in a celebratory manner. But nobody gets to have a job forever because they were great at it decades ago.

LOL, Jim Boeheim’s “retirement” was even more awkward than I imagined it could be.
Lost his last game to one of the coaches he accused of buying its team.
In the tournament of the conference he never wanted to join.
And effectively got canned in a press release.

Syracuse announces that Jim Boeheim is retiring and will be replaced by Adrian Autry.
Don’t know that we’ll ever see another coach spend 47 years as the head coach at his alma mater. Quite the legacy.

There will never be another Jim Boeheim. The greatest coach, father, and mentor I could ever ask for. A man that gave a city, program, and university everything he had his whole life with countless accomplishments. Excited for a lot of golf in our future, love you pops ❤️🍊 pic.twitter.com/EAtDnjSZEw

The great Mike Hopkins, on Jim Boeheim: “He’s given his heart and soul to that school. Still surprised they don’t have a statue made of him in the middle of campus. When you think of Syracuse University, you think of Jim Boeheim and you think of the Carrier Dome.”

Jim Boeheim on Feb. 4, 2023 said Wake Forest “bought a team” and bemoaned the state of college athletics.
On March 8, 2023 Wake Forest ousted Syracuse in the ACC Tournament — which turned out to be Boeheim’s last game as coach at Syracuse.

Jim Boeheim goes out following one final salty press conference in Greensboro of all places with zero fanfare or advanced notice to media.
It’s like the end of “The Sopranos.” People will be frustrated at first but honestly, it’s perfect and the clues were there the whole time.

The three most victorious coaches in college basketball history have all retired in the past two years, all after illustrious tenures in the ACC (who can forget Jim Boeheim’s classic ACC teams of the 80s, 90s and 2000s at Syracuse).

Again, I cannot stress this enough, this was ALWAYS how Boeheim’s retirement was going to go. Messy, confusing, and leaving you with an uneasy sense of what actually happened. Like waking up the morning after Flip Night.

Syracuse announced this without any prepared statement from Boeheim in the press release, just in case anyone can’t tell what happened here.

Jim Boeheim is one of the BEST coaches that has EVER coached this game of basketball. He has given his life to this game for you and I to enjoy CUSE moments. I am honored to have shared the same court with a true icon! Love you Coach and THANK YOU! SU4LIFE🍊

Coach –
You are one of us!
You are the only @Cuse_MBB coach I have ever known
I sat at Sutter’s Mill in ’87 and in my living room in ’03
You don’t know it but we were in this together, ups and downs – and I know my story is like millions of others
Thank you, Coach Boeheim! https://t.co/GxyuVAQHKp
— Senator John W. Mannion (@SenJohnMannion) March 8, 2023
There were nine US presidents during Boeheim’s tenure at Syracuse.
Hung around for too long, but a tremendous legacy. Hopefully he gets to fully enjoy retirement https://t.co/1xNj40pXJx

In the mid 1990s I was at Jim Boeheim’s basketball camp in the Carrier Dome. Jim was giving a big speech to hundreds of kids and points to the tiny man up in the rafters running. He said, “That’s my point guard Adrian Autry, you gotta want it like he does.” https://t.co/7zU3XnvOS8

I love Red Autry and fondly remember going to Harlem back in the 90s and meeting his mom etc for a story. But I’m a little surprised they didn’t test the market a bit. 🍊 Thank you Coach Boeheim for putting Cuse Hoops on the map. It gave us joy every winter up there in CNY! Go… https://t.co/IpxS7WZveE
