Gary Neville tried to get an apology out of Graeme Souness for his comments about Casemiro earlier this season.

The midfielder has been a revelation at Manchester United this season following his £70million switch from Real Madrid.

He helped them secure their first piece of silverware in six years as they won the Carabao Cup.

The 30-year-old was handed a six-year contract in the summer and he has been one of the signings of the season, helping manager Erik ten hag to transform the club’s fortunes in a matter of months.

In August, Liverpool legend Souness admitted on talkSPORT he was far from impressed by the signing of the five-time Champions League winner.

“He was playing with great players. He’s not a great player. He has never been a great player.

“I see him as a steady Eddie who will help United be more solid in midfield.

“I don’t think he has got a great range of passing. I don’t think he is going to help other people play.

“I think he was lucky to be in that Real Madrid team. I never look forward to watching Casemiro. [Karim] Benzema, definitely. The other midfield players, definitely.

“I never thought, ‘I’m really excited to watch Casemrio play today’.”

“He is 30 years old and it’s £70m. Too much money. It is Manchester United all over again.

“Manchester United will pay a premium because it is Manchester United and the Premier League and people know it’s awash with money. But I don’t see him making them any better when they have the ball.”

Prior to the Liverpool vs Manchester United clash at Anfield on Sunday, Neville tried his best to get an apology out of Souness on Instagram live for those comments.

Neville: “Can we have an apology. Your call on Casemiro, are you changing your mind? You said he was a good player and not a great player.”

Souness: “No, I said he was a steady Eddie.”

Nevile: “He’s more than a steady Eddie.”

Souness: “In that position, I’d be happy to be described as a steady Eddie.

Neville: “But he’s more than a steady Eddie, he’s surprised even me.”

Souness: “I would described Casemiro as a foundation piece. You can build your team on that. I like him, there’s nothing to dislike about him.”

Neville: “Is he better than you thought? He’s better than I thought.

Souness: “No, I tell you what he’s doing better than I thought was getting goals, which is not really his strongest point.”
