Today is Texas Independence Day, celebrating the day in 1836 when the Texas Declaration of Independence was signed at Washington-on-the-Brazos.
The Texas Declaration was issued during the revolution against the Mexican government that began in October 1835. The document was signed in the midst of the 13-day siege at The Alamo in San Antonio, about 170 miles to the southwest.
Fifty days after the Declaration was signed, the Texas army routed Santa Anna’s Mexican troops at the Battle of San Jacinto. It took 18 minutes to do it.
Texas Independence Day is a state public holiday, so some state government offices will be closed. Some may be open like some DMV offices, but may be operating with limited crews.
