Red Wings trade Filip Hronek to Vancouver for first-, second-round picks

The sell-off has begun for the Detroit Red Wings prior to Friday’s 3 p.m. trade deadline.

The Red Wings on Wednesday dealt defenseman Filip Hronek to the Vancouver Canucks for first- and second-round selections.

The first-rounder this year originally belonged to the New York Islanders (swapped in the Bo Horvat trade). If it falls in the top 12, the Red Wings instead will receive an unprotected 2024 first-round selection. The second-rounder is Vancouver’s in 2023. The Canucks also obtained Detroit’s fourth-round pick this year.

Detroit now has two first-round picks (potentially) and three second-round selections this year (their own, St. Louis’ and Vancouver’s).

Hronek, 25, has nine goals and 29 assists in 60 games. The nine goals and 38 points equal career highs. He suffered an arm injury in Tuesday’s 6-1 loss to Ottawa which might sideline him for a while.

Hronek has one year remaining on his contract at a $4.4 million cap hit. He will be a restricted free agent in 2025.

The Red Wings selected the mobile, right-shooting defender in the second round in 2016 (53rd overall). He has always had offensive ability and has manned the point on the power play but has struggled defensively much of his career. He has appeared in 305 career games and has collected 30 goals and 126 assists.

The Red Wings now have nobody remaining in their organization from the 2016 draft.
