The New York Knicks picked up where they left off heading into the break with three quick victories.
It’s been an eventful week in the NBA. There is a new team on top, with the Milwaukee Bucks usurping the Boston Celtics for the best record. Los Angeles Lakers star Lebron James is missing games with a foot injury that could keep him out for the rest of the season. Plus, Giannis Antetokounmpo poked a little fun at Kevin Durant for joining super teams.
Heading into the final stretch of the season, there is a tight race for playoff positioning while other teams are lottery bound. In large part thanks to Jalen Brunson’s efforts, the New York Knicks are in prime position to avoid the purgatory of the Play-In Tournament, currently sitting in the fifth spot in the Easter Conference.
The Knicks rank in the eighth slot in Sports Illustrated’s most recent Power Rankings, up from the No. 10 spot in the previous list. SI’s reasoning behind the ranking:
Monday’s win against the Celtics was the sixth straight for the Knicks overall and their second in a row over Boston. New York picked up where it left off heading into the break with three quick victories. Julius Randle racked up 46 points in a win in Washington, 28 back at Madison Square Garden to beat the Pelicans and a game-high 23 against Boston. Mitchell Robinson returned to the lineup after a monthlong absence and quickly put together a trio of double doubles. Next up is the fourth and final game of the year against Brooklyn at home Wednesday.
Can the Knicks keep the winning streak going? Next up, New York is a 7.5-point favorite against the Brooklyn Nets in Madison Square Garden (7:30 p.m. ET, MSG). A statement Knicks win would surely further the positive momentum. A Knicks victory would also split the series for the first time since the 2019-20 campaign.
In the postseason battle, the Knicks look to be competing with the Miami Heat and Nets for the final two guaranteed playoff spots in the East.
