Vancouver, B.C. – Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that the club has acquired defenceman Filip Hronek and a 2023 fourth-round draft pick (Detroit) from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for a 2023 conditional first-round draft pick (New York Islanders) and Vancouver’s own 2023 second-round draft pick.

“We are excited to add a 25-year-old right-shot defenceman who handles the puck well and possesses a strong two-way game,” said Allvin. “He has steadily progressed throughout his time in Detroit to show that he is a top pairing defenceman in this league. We are happy to continue to add younger pieces to build out the core of this team.”

Hronek, 25, has appeared in all 60 games for the Red Wings this season, so far matching a career-high 38 points (9-29-38) and +8 plus-minus rating, in addition to recording 34 penalty minutes. Prior to being acquired by Vancouver, he ranked first among all Red Wings defencemen in almost all offensive categories this season, including goals, assists, points, power play goals (4) and power play points (16), and also ranked tied for second in points among all Detroit skaters.

The 6’0″, 190-pound defenceman has previously spent all five seasons of his NHL career with Detroit, accumulating 156 points (30-126-156) and 162 penalty minutes across 305 regular season games. He began his professional career with the Grand Rapids Griffins (AHL) in 2017, eventually tallying 65 points (19-46-65), 93 penalty minutes, and a +25 rating in 108 regular season games. Additionally, Hronek played 12 AHL playoff games with the Griffins across three seasons highlighted by a Calder Cup Championship in 2017.

A product of Hradec Králové, Czechia, Hronek has represented his country on several occasions, including four World Championships (2018, 2019, 2021, 2022 – Gold) as well as two consecutive IIHF World Junior Championships tournaments in 2016 and 2017.

Hronek was originally selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the second round, 53rd overall in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.
