Litchfield’s Simon Collins wins Week 10 Athlete of the Week

HILLSDALE COUNTY — The week 10 Athlete of the Week voting has closed, and now it is time to announce the winner. The weekly ballots are posted every Monday and voting is open through Wednesday at midnight. Nominees this week included a homecoming standout effort, three state qualifiers and two bowling conference stars.

Nominees are submitted by Sunday every week, and submissions are done through coaches and from the Hillsdale Daily News sports staff. Registering to vote automatically gives you a chance to win a prize from one of our sponsors. Jonesville wrestler Austin Bowers won the week 9 ballot after taking first at the district championships.

Week 10 Winner: Simon Collins – Litchfield Boys Basketball

Litchfield junior Simon Collins was voted the week 10 Athlete of the Week. Collins is the second Terrier boys basketball winner after Junior Alvarez won in week 5. Terrier Simon Collins was nominated for the award after helping his team win their 2023 homecoming game. Collins has been a double-digit scoring leader for the Terriers in several games near the end of this season.

He led his team to a 40-29 victory over Tekonsha in week 10. He had a total of 19 points and five rebounds, including four three-pointers. Collins looks to continue to lead his team in future games, as the Terriers look to end the season with a winning record. The Terriers and Collins will move on to their district postseason games after the conclusion of next week’s games. The Terrier girls basketball team will start their postseason on Feb. 28.

Honorable Mentions

  • Shalee Van Heerde – Hillsdale Girls Bowling: Sophomore Hornet Shalee Van Heerde competed in the LCAA conference singles tournament with her teammates during week 10. She finished with 1st team all-conference honors, 1st team all-tournament honors and finished with as one of the top five stats leaders for the tournament. She earned first-team honors with teammate Chloe Manifold.

  • Tyler Milks – Jonesville Wrestling: Tyler Milks took fourth place at the regional finals to earn another qualifying bid for the state finals. This is his second straight trip to Ford Field and his second straight fourth place finish at regionals. He will be joined by teammate Derek Ballinger, who also went to the finals last season.

  • Brooke Vanous – Pittsford Girls Bowling: Wildcat Brooke Vanous placed first at the TCC League singles Championship. She is the league champion for 2023 and will compete at regionals in week 11.

  • Wyatt Wahtola – Hillsdale Wrestling: Hillsdale sophomore Wyatt Wahtola qualified for the state championship in his first season of wrestling. Wahtola took fourth place at regionals in the heavyweight tournament. Wahtola heads to Ford Field with teammates John and Stephen Petersen.

  • Eathan Westfall – Reading Wrestling: Senior Ranger Eathan Westfall won his third individual wrestling regional championship during week 10. This is his second straight trip to Ford Field, and it is his second straight regional finals where he was able to pin all of his opponents. He remains undefeated on the season.
