George Kambosos Jr has has come through the biggest challenge of his professional career, earning a spit decision win over Lee Selby in London.

The victory, earned with scores of 118-110 and 116-112 Kambosos, and 114-115 Selby, secures the Sydneysider a mandatory shot at Teofimo Lopez’s lightweight IBF world title.

The 27-year-old called out Lopez immediately after the fight.

“Lopez, let’s do it Down Under. Two lions, let’s go to war,” he said.

“I want the fight, I’ve wanted it since he won the fight.

“It’s (tonight) is a massive achievement, but I’ve got so much more left to do. I’m gonna go out and train tonight because I want that world title.”

Kambosos landed the bigger shots and kept up the pace until the final bell despite the frustration of having the eighth round cut short by a minute when Selby was hurt.

Kambosos stalked the center of the ring early on, while Selby moved well on the outside and had his jab going from the opening minute.

The Australian went to the body in the second, immediately slowing Selby’s movement down.

Having said he wanted to stop Selby inside the distance, Kambosos was throwing with power and fury, while Selby attempted to stay at range on the end of his jab.

While Selby continued bouncing around in his fluid style outside, Kambosos doubled up well on his jab and unleashed his power when he got in close.

Kambosos had his best success when targetting Selby’s midsection, while the Welshman was quick to ease into his rhythm.

The seventh was one of the best for Kambosos, who landed a few nice counters and had Selby backed up against the ropes midway through the frame.

Kambosos rattled Selby with a big right hand in the eighth round. Selby was hurt momentarily, but threw back before a mistake with the timekeeping ended the round a full minute early.

Selby began getting desperate in the closing three rounds, and started walking forward with purpose for the first time in the fight.

Kambosos was up to the task, answering fire with fire and looking as though he enjoyed trading inside.

Selby pushed again in the 12th and final round, but a headbutt was the most telling shot he could land.
