At least five people were shot on multiple locations in and near Michigan State University’ East Lansing campus Monday night, authorities confirmed at a press conference.

“This incident started this evening around 8:18pm at Berkey Hall on campus. We received multiple 911 calls of a shooting inside Berkey Hall,” Interim MSU Police Chief Chris Rozman said “There we did locate several victims of a shooting. The incident did move to a building in close proximity to the Michigan State University Union building where there was another report of a shooting immediately following the first incident.”

Sparrow Hospital spokesperson John Foren confirmed five students had been transported to the hospital with injuries, but there was no word on their condition. Some of the victims have life-threatening injuries, Rozman said.

The shooter is still at large and has not been apprehended.

He described the suspect as a “Black male, shorter in stature, wearing red shoes, a jean jacket and a ballcap and we will follow up with additional descriptors of that suspect.”

The suspect was last seen leaving the north side of the MSU Union on foot, Rozman said.

He pleaded with parents to not come to campus, given the fluid situation, and said students should remain sheltered in place.

“We currently have hundreds of police officers and law enforcement officials state, local and federal on campus working in a coordinated effort to ensure the safety of campus and identify and apprehend the suspect,” Rozman said.

The police didn’t take questions but said more information would be provided in an hour.

Rozman urged the public to rely only on accurate information sources, and not law enforcement radio, for updates, citing false reports of suspects and shootings that had been relayed over the scanner.
