Tagovailoa throws first TD for Terps in strong start vs. Minnesota

The Taulia Tagovailoa era got off to a rocky start with a blowout loss to Northwestern, but the Maryland quarterback rebounded quite nicely at the start of Friday’s game against Minnesota, throwing his first touchdown pass for the Terps. The play came on a strong opening drive for Maryland which Tagovailoa capped off with an eight-yard touchdown pass to running back Jake Funk.

The touchdown capped off an 11-play drive for 82 yards. As Funk scampered into the end zone, the celebration was a bit muted as a flag was thrown. Funk had a clear lane to the end zone and it was evidently a bit too clear. It looked like Maryland was guilty of a pick play, but the flag was picked up as the pass was caught behind the line of scrimmage thus negating an offensive pass interference call.

Despite a horrific game against Northwestern, the Terps have gotten off to strong starts in both games. In the first game, Maryland went 12 plays for 56 yards and three points, their only points of the game. On Friday, Tagovailoa completed five out of six passes for 55 yards and the touchdown. This time, however, Tagovailoa kept up the momentum in the second drive as he took the ball himself 39 yards to the end zone to spot Maryland the 14-0 lead.
