France captain Antoine Dupont brilliantly denied Ireland’s Mack Hansen from scoring before half-time of the Six Nations clash at Aviva Stadium.
Ireland broke into the France 22, and Hugo Keenan kicked the ball forward. Keenan and Gael Fickou dived for the ball, but it spilt loose, and Hansen scooped it up.
Hansen was just a few metres short of the line and looked certain to score but was incredibly stopped by Dupont, who held the winger up and drove him away from the try line.
Dupont’s brilliance!
Dupont’s brilliance on defence was hailed on Twitter, with Andrew Forde questioning whether he was actually made in a factory.
“Are we sure Antoine Dupont wasn’t made in a factory by a man seeking to create the best rugby player of all time?”
Commentator Nick Heath joked that Dupont was running a removal firm.
“Antoine Dupont removals firm doing exceptional business. Holding up a grand piano on the spiral staircase. Wow,” Heath tweeted.
Tackle of the Championship
Former England captain Will Carling tweeted that he thinks that Dupont has already made the tackle of the competition.
“Think Antoine Dupont wins tackle of the Six Nations…..so far!!!”
Journalist Paul Edison was lost for words, tweeting: “No words for what Dupont does on a rugby pitch”.
Former England and Lions back Ugo Moyne tweeted: “Genuinely one of the best try-saving tackles I’ve seen. Mental strength from Dupont.”
While others questioned whether it was still too soon to speak about Dupont as one of the all time greats.
The brilliance on defence denied Ireland a potential seven points, although they would score once more before half-time with Johnny Sexton slotting a penalty to give his side a 22-16 lead over France at the break.
