SEVENTEEN’s Seungkwan, DK, and Hoshi Discuss BSS’s First Single Album “Second Wind”

As a group, SEVENTEEN are known for keeping things fresh — especially when it comes to their formations. Though the 13-member act comprises three solid teams — hip-hop, vocal, and performance — it’s not uncommon for the members to switch things up. During their yearly Caratland fan meeting, unit swap stages have become a tradition. For ; [Semicolon], a special album released in 2020, the group tried age-based pairings in an effort to show their variety, member Jun explained during a media gathering. “All 13 of us have our unique charms and personalities so we wanted to show that no matter how we group ourselves, we have new things to show you,” Dino added. Among the many special units SEVENTEEN has tried over their eight years together, however, one takes the crown: BSS.
Short for Boo Seok Soon (부석순), a portmanteau of their real names, BSS is made up of members Seungkwan, DK, and Hoshi. The trio “officially” debuted in 2018 with the good feel anthem “Just Do It” (거침없이), a guitar-led track meant to fill fans with positive energy and encourage them not to overthink and, well, just do it. After just one song, BSS established themselves as the go-to purveyors of feel-good music in SEVENTEEN.
“Just Do It” was a special song. It was supposed to be just a skit for Caratland, a one-time thing. But fans wanted more, and BSS delivered. The trio is back and bigger than ever with Second Wind, their first single album, containing not one but three tracks exuding the same energy that captivated fans when “Just Do It” first came out. Playing with fitness elements galore, BSS are getting us ready for a race that’ll last the entire day — from morning to night — with the three songs in Second Wind serving as the soundtrack.
To coincide with the release, Teen Vogue caught up with Seungkwan, DK, and Hoshi to chat about their own race and routines as well as their experience working on Second Wind. Find our chat below, accompanied by some exclusive behind-the-scenes pictures from the making of the music video for the title track.
Teen Vogue: There are three members in BSS and three songs in this album. Could you describe one song each and say what you most like about it?
Seungkwan: “Fighting” is the lead single for the very first BSS album! When “Fighting” is used in Korean, it’s used as a word of encouragement to cheer up someone in a difficult situation. I love that we finally got to work with Young Ji for this track. Her voice is very powerful; I want to thank her again for all she brought to the song.
DK: The second track, “Lunch,” is the music you need post-lunch. The lyrics are fun, so I would recommend that all our listeners also pay close attention to the lyrics! It’ll leave you smiling at least once and help you fight off the drowsiness after lunch.
