Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has been given a leave of absence and will undergo surgery today to remove his gallbladder, the club have confirmed.

The Italian fell ill earlier this week and complained of ‘severe abdominal pain’.

The former Chelsea boss has been diagnosed with cholecystitis – a condition that causes redness and swelling of the gallbladder.

Conte will be given time off to recover from the operation and will return to managerial duties after a ‘period of recuperation’.

‘Following a diagnosis of cholecystitis, he will be undergoing surgery to remove his gallbladder today (Wednesday) and will return following a period of recuperation.

‘Everyone at the Club wishes him well.’

Tottenham face Manchester City on Sunday, before taking on Leicester City on the 11th February.

It’s unlikely that the Italian will return within a fortnight, though the club are putting no timeframe on when he will be back in the dugout.

Spurs are fifth in the Premier League table and they take on AC Milan in the last-16 of the Champions League later this month.
