Duncan Watmore looks set to leave Middlesbrough before Tuesday’s transfer deadline, with a move to Millwall in the works.

The Lions have tabled a bid for the forward and it looks increasingly likely that he will be leaving the club before the transfer window closes. Boro haven’t stood in his way, with Watmore not a regular starter and his contract due to expire at the end of the season.

Millwall are looking to add to their attacking options this month with manager Garry Rowett bemoaning the fact Tom Bradshaw was their only fit striker when they lost at the Riverside a fortnight ago. The move is expected to be a permanent one.

In turn, Boro are understood to be keen to add a wide forward of their own before the window closes at 11 pm on Tuesday evening, but any further additions after Dan Barlaser were dependent on departures.

Watmore’s exit should pave the way for Boro to bring in an alternative target before the window closes, with the club already believed to have their targets in mind. It’s likely they’re confident they can add someone given they’re letting Watmore go.

Watmore proved a shrewd signing for Boro on a free transfer back in November 2020. Offered a contract after weeks of training for free in an attempt to earn a deal after being released by Sunderland, he finished that first season as Boro top scorer, despite arriving midway through the campaign. In total, the 28-year-old has made 97 appearances for the club, scoring 21 goals and assisting seven more.

Boro will now move to replace him before the window closes, though links to Rotherham winger Chiedozie Ogbene are believed to be wide of the mark.
