49ers fans pose with the Rocky statue outside the Philadelphia Museum of Art on Saturday in Philadelphia ahead of the NFC championship game between the Niners and the Eagles.
A 49ers shirt around the neck of the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s iconic Rocky statue got a lot of attention on Friday ahead of the NFC championship between the Niners and the Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field in Philly.
And visiting San Francisco fans were at it again on Saturday, this time with a far-less-subtle, far-more-cringe rally at the statue that included chants of “Brocky! Brocky! Brocky!” — a reference to Niners quarterback Brock Purdy, who’s come out of nowhere to help a loaded San Francisco team to within a game of the Super Bowl after playoff wins over the Seahawks and Cowboys.
Fans were seen waving around a “Brocky” world heavyweight boxing champ-style belt and a 49ers flag while Eagles fans in the background — like almost anyone on the internet who saw it — hilariously sported semi-apathetic grimaces.
Purdy mania thus far has been warranted, however. He remains undefeated in his NFL career — starting seven games and winning seven games — including the two postseason affairs, where he went without an interception in 59 passing attempts. He has now thrown 16 touchdowns to just four picks in his NFL career and mostly held his own against a pressure-packed Cowboys front line.
He’ll have an even bigger task on Sunday against the Eagles, though: Philadelphia sports the NFL’s top-ranked pass defense and a terrifyingly good defensive line. Philadelphia had the second-highest pressure rate in the NFL this season (39%) and the most sacks (75), with four players sporting double-digit sack totals.
The underdog 49ers QB will see if he can have his own “Adriannnnnnnnnnn” moment Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field. Kickoff against the top-seeded Eagles is set for noon.
