Lauren Murphy has weighed in on the controversial UFC 275 fight between Taila Santos and Valentina Shevchenko. In the event, Shevchenko put her Flyweight Championship on the line against the Brazilian contender in a grueling five-round bout.
The close fight was ultimately ruled by a split decision in favor of ‘Bullet’. However, many felt that Santos had done enough to be considered the winner.
Lauren Murphy is no stranger to challenging the longtime queen of flyweight. At UFC 266, ‘Lucky’ succumbed to Shevchenko’s razor sharp elbows and punches in the fourth round. She rebounded from the TKO loss with a decision win over Miesha Tate in July 2022.
Now, before her next showdown with Jéssica Andrade, Murphy has shared his belief that Shevchenko should have been declared the loser at UFC 275.
On the media day of UFC 283, Lauren Murphy was asked if she could fight ‘Bullet’ again if she beats Andrade. ‘Lucky’ wasn’t sure of her chances of getting another title fight. She went on to discuss Shevchenko’s matchup with Taila Santos. The comments stemmed from the interviewer’s note about ‘Bullet’ having been in a remarkably long absence from the Octagon ever since.
“She [Shevchenko] had a pretty tough fight in her last fight, Like, I think he got all he could handle”.
When asked if he thought ‘Bullet’ won the fight, Murphy was quick to clarify that he thought Santos had done the job.
“No, I think Taila won that fight. I think he definitely showed that she’s [Shevchenko] human, You know? So maybe everyone is beatable.”
Murphy went on to point out that almost no fighter is unbeatable or victorious. PFor Shevchenko, Santos’ fight was arguably the most competitive at flyweight, a division in which she is undefeated.
