Ex-Michigan QB steps in for Patrick Mahomes, leads 98-yard TD drive in Chiefs’ win

Welcome to the NFL playoffs, Chad Henne.

The 35-year-old entered Saturday with one career postseason appearance in his 15-year career. He made his second in the Kansas City Chiefs’ AFC divisional round victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars and led the team 98 yards for a touchdown on his first drive.

He bookended it with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Travis Kelce that gave Kansas City a 17-7 lead. The 2008 second-round pick entered the game in the second quarter because of an ankle injury suffered by MVP frontrunner Patrick Mahomes.

Henne was on the field for just one other drive – a one-play kneel-down in the final minute of the half – before Mahomes returned to the game. Despite his brief appearance, Henne’s touchdown pass was the 100th thrown by a former Michigan quarterback during the Super Bowl era. Of course, 88 have been thrown by Tom Brady.

The only other playoff game Henne appeared in was in 2020, when he came on in relief of Mahomes in a divisional round game against the Cleveland Brown. Henne completed 6 of 8 passes for 66 yards and an interception in a 22-17 win. He also rushed twice for 12 yards.

During the 2022 regular season, Henne appeared in three games and was 0 for 2 passing. The former five-star recruit from Pennsylvania has started just one game since 2014 but has played in 78 career games. He has passed for 13,290 yards, 60 touchdowns and 63 interceptions.
