Manchester United’s hope of moving to second place in the Premier League was sabotaged by Michael Olise’s late equaliser for Crystal Palace 1-1 on Wednesday.

Erik ten Hag’s United looked solid for a 10th consecutive win in all competitions for the first time since 2009. However, the side was rocked when Olise’s left-footed free kick found the top corner in the 91st minute.

Coming on the back of victory in the Manchester derby, United gave a go to on-loan striker Wout Weghorst, but it was the old face – Bruno Fernandes – who handed United an early lead at Selhurst Park.

Fernandes fired an unstoppable shot after receiving Christian Eriksen’s pass in the 43rd minute. Ten Hag’s side dominated the second half for most of the period but could not control Olise, who did not give goalkeeper David De Gea any chance to stop his magic.

Had United sealed the victory, they would have surprised Arsenal on Sunday as a win would have put them within three points of the Londoners.

However, United stay in third place with 39 points, the same as Manchester City, who have a better goal difference. Meanwhile, toppers Arsenal have 47 points.

Manchester United will next play Arsenal on January 21 but will be without the services of midfielder Casemiro, who received a yellow card for a rash foul, triggering a suspension.

“We are not happy with a draw. We should have taken our chances and closed the game,” Fernandes said. “They scored a great goal at the end. Nothing we can do now.

“We have to look forward now. Other games are coming. We are still doing good things. We are really disappointed with the result but the next one is close.”
