The wrestling world was plunged into an unexpected state of shock on Tuesday as news broke that Jay Briscoe, one half of the Ring Of Honor Tag Team Champions, had passed away. Briscoe reportedly died in a car accident aged just 38, and tributes to the late wrestler have been pouring in from every corner of the industry ever since.

WWE Pays Tribute And Switches Up A Segment

That includes from WWE. Even though The Briscoes have never wrestled in WWE, the company paid its respects on NXT last night. It has also been reported that a segment planned for Tuesday night’s edition of WWE’s third brand was promptly canceled following the news of Briscoe’s passing. The segment would have included a mock funeral, so naturally would have been in poor taste considering the news.

According to Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp, the plan was for The New Day to hold a mock funeral for Pretty Deadly’s NXT Tag Team Title reign. The two teams have been feuding over the gold ever since Xavier Woods returned to the brand and brought Kofi Kingston with him. The New Day won the titles at the first time of asking and will defend the titles against Pretty Deadly and Gallus at Vengeance Day.

A Funeral Segment Altered

The alterned segment saw the three teams brawl instead, and respects were paid to Briscoe at around the same time. Although The Briscoes never competed in WWE, they have friends and will have worked with a number of people currently under the company’s employ. No doubt many in WWE, and perhaps even some who worked NXT last night, were rocked by the news.

For anyone to pass away at such a young age is a tragedy and what Jay’s brother and the rest of his family must be going through right now is hard to imagine. The thoughts of everyone here at TheSportster go out to Briscoe’s friends and family during what must be an almost unfathomably difficult time.
