Messy storm targeting Ontario…and bringing the cold with it

As in many parts of Canada, Ontario has experienced relatively mild temperatures throughout January. Get ready for that to change as storm systems conjure up much colder weather.

As the jet stream becomes more amplified towards the end of this week and into the final weeks of January, this signifies that a more active storm track is ahead with colder air waiting closely on the side lines.

Another Colorado low will make its way into the province later this week, bringing a messy mix of rain, snow, and some icy conditions but is expected to bring a more widespread swath of snow.

Southwestern Ontario will see freezing rain to start, followed by rain, while parts of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) are expected to see snow that will transition into ice and rain.

Ottawa and eastern Ontario will primarily see snow. However, there is still some uncertainty as to the exact track of the system, which will ultimately determine who sees the heaviest totals.

Going into next week, there is high confidence that the pattern will remain stormy, but the details still need to become more clear.

An early look ahead shows that there is likely to be a high-impact storm striking much of the eastern U.S. and Eastern Canada, with ample moisture tracking up from the Gulf of Mexico.

Whether it will come in a couple of waves of systems throughout the week or if it will track in as one big system mid-to-late week is something that forecasters will be closely watching.

What we do know is that as these systems track across the province, they will open the gate to much colder air than what Ontario has experienced this past month, where temperatures on average have trended 3-10 degrees above normal across the province.
