Liverpool ‘definitely’ have £85k-a-week midfielder on list at Anfield

Liverpool signing Matheus Nunes remains “one to watch” despite any potential deal being pushed back until the summer, journalist Ben Jacobs has told GIVEMESPORT.
The midfielder has played less than 20 times for Wolverhampton Wanderers this season, having arrived from Sporting CP in the summer.

Arriving from Sporting for a club-record £42.2 million deal in the summer, less than six months into his Wolves career, it’s hard to believe Nunes is already being touted with a move away. Described as “one of the best players in the world” by Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, Nunes is attracting interest from big Premier League names with Liverpool’s rumoured to be chasing a summer deal.
Having “admired” Nunes before his Molineux switch, as per reports, Liverpool are said to be establishing their interest once more. According to the Telegraph, the one-time Premier League champions are exploring a £44 million deal for Nunes, which would be completed in the summer transfer window.
After nearly signing for Liverpool last year, the report goes onto say, Liverpool will now follow through on an agreement to bid for the Portuguese international. Nunes, who pockets a reported £85,000-a-week, could follow in the footsteps of Portugal teammate Diogo Jota, who joined Jurgen Klopp’s side from Wolves in September 2020.
Of course, the Portuguese links in the Liverpool squad extend beyond Jota and Nunes, with Darwin Nunez joining the Reds from Benfica in the summer. Clearly a market Liverpool favour, while the Nunes transfer might make sense in the summer, it does leave questions hanging over any pursuit of a midfielder in January.
What has Jacobs said about Nunes and Liverpool?
When quizzed by GIVEMESPORT on the potential Nunes to Liverpool deal, journalist Jacobs reiterated Liverpool’s patient approach in the market but did admit it could have an impact on their January dealings.
“So that [moving for Nunes] might be an example of Liverpool waiting until the summer and then moving,” explained Jacobs to GMS.
“Again, that would influence their January too, but Nunes is definitely a player on Liverpool’s radar.
“They just can’t get it done in January, with him having played for the football club this season. So that’s one to watch.”
Who might Liverpool target in January?
Regardless of any summer plans, Liverpool’s midfield problem continues to haunt their current campaign, with ex-Reds legend Jamie Carragher lambasting the club’s recruitment team. Speaking after the Brentford defeat, Carragher lambasted their approach in the market, stating: “Liverpool have bought one midfield player in four-and-a-half years. It’s come back to haunt them now.”
With key midfield players either ageing or struggling for form, Liverpool are said to be interested in reinforcements this month. Having enjoyed a stellar World Cup campaign, Sofyan Amrabat is one name that continues to be linked with an Anfield move. Footmercato are reporting Amrabat is being targeted by Liverpool in January, but they may face competition from fellow Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur, who are also rumoured to be interested.
