The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has explained why Tom Rogers wasn’t given out after Adam Zampa had tried to inflict a run out in the non-striker’s end during the Melbourne derby in the Big Bash League on Tuesday.

Controversy erupted when Zampa proceeded to flick the bails at the non-striker’s end during the final over of the Renegades’ innings. Umpires and batters asked the Stars captain if he was appealing and he proceeded to say he wanted the wicket.

The TV umpire was called into the equation and he ruled the decision in Rogers’ favour as Zampa had completed his bowling action before flicking the bails.

MCC have now taken to Twitter to issue a statement as to why it was ruled not out. The guardians of cricket laws said that a bowler cannot go all the way around in the bowling action and then run the non-striker out.

“The non-striker can be run out if he/she is out of his/her ground up until the moment the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball. That means when the arm gets to its highest point.”

“The bowler is *not* entitled to go all the way around in the bowling action and then run the non-striker out,” read the statement by MCC.

Stars coach David Hussey commented on the matter and said that the team would have withdrawn the appeal if it was given out.

“I talked to Zampa already and he said that If it had’ve been given out we would’ve withdrawn our appeal anyway. It’s not the right way to play cricket yet. It’s a horrible warning for the batter to not leave too early because generally at the end of the innings, that’s what happens,” said Hussey.

Rogers would be fired up by the incident as he picked up five wickets to win the match for the Renegades by 33 runs.
