Frank McGarvey dead aged 66: Celtic legend passes away with loving family by his side as tributes pour in

CELTIC icon Frank McGarvey has passed away aged 66.

The former striker was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last October.

A few days later he walked out onto the Celtic Park pitch to a warm reception from the home fans.

McGarvey was visibly moved as the crowd sang You’ll Never Walk Alone.

His death was announced by son Sean who released a short statement.

It read: “Our much loved dad sadly passed away this morning with his family by his side.

“We are so thankful for all the support we have received over the past few months.”

Tributes have poured in with Celtic releasing a statement saying: “Everyone at Celtic is extremely saddened to hear of the death of former striker, Frank McGarvey, who passed away earlier this morning at the age of 66.

“The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Celtic are with Frank’s family at this extremely sad time.

“RIP Frank, YNWA 🍀💚”

St Mirren released a statement which reads: “St Mirren Football Club is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Frank McGarvey at the age of 66.

“Frank will forever be remembered at St Mirren and our deepest condolences are with Frank’s loved ones at this very sad time.”

Liverpool said in a statement: “Rest in peace, Frank McGarvey.

“The thoughts of everyone at the club are with Frank’s family and friends at this difficult time.”

Former Celtic player John Hartson said: “Rest In Peace Frank Mcgarvey.. thoughts are with the Mcgarvey family and close friends at this sad time. 🙏”

One fan wrote: “Absolutely gutted to hear Frank McGarvey has passed away. What a player and what an ambassador for our club.

“He will be sorely missed. You’ll never Walk Alone, Frank.

“Thoughts are with his family. God Bless.”
