Former Burnley boss Dyche favourite to replace axed Dean Smith at Norwich

Ex Burnley gaffer Dyche is the early favourite to replace Smith at Norwich after the Canaries boss was sacked on Tuesday.

The fifth-placed Championship side axed former Aston Villa boss Smith following their 2-1 Boxing Day defeat to Luton Town.

The Canaries officially confirmed the news on Tuesday afternoon. Smith’s assistant Craig Shakespeare and first-team coach Liam Bramley have also left the club with immediate effect.

Smith, 51, who took charge in November 2021, was informed of the decision on Tuesday morning, hours after their Boxing Day defeat.

He spent 13 months in charge of the Canaries – overseeing 56 games, winning 16, drawing 12 and losing 28. A win rate of 29% was not enough to keep Smith in a job and sporting director Stuart Webber is on the look out for his successor. And the early market leader is (4/1) Dyche, who has been out of work since leaving Burnley in April 2022 after 10 years at Turf Moor. Dyche has huge experience in the Championship as manager and guided Burnley to the Premier League twice.

Former Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder is the 5/1 second favourite. Wilder was sacked at Middlesbrough in October 2022 with the club in the bottom three of the Championship.

Scott Parker is a 6/1 shot after leaving Bournemouth earlier this season. The former Fulham boss was axed just hours after the 9-0 defeat at Liverpool after which he said the club were currently “unequipped” for the Premier League.

Steven Gerrard is also in the running, according to the bookies, after leaving Aston Villa earlier this season. The Liverpool legend was axed by Villa in October after 11 months at the helm. He departed with a 32% win ratio and is 8/1 to replace his predecessor at Villa, Smith.

A coaching team led by head of football development Steve Weaver and set-piece coach Allan Russell will take charge of Norwich’s matches in the interim – starting with Friday’s home date with Reading.
