David Moyes fires title warning to Arsenal after West Ham beaten at Emirates Stadium

David Moyes has downplayed Arsenal’s title chances after the Gunners beat his West Ham side 3-1 at the Emirates. The Scotsman suggested Manchester City are a step above his Boxing Day opposition as he tipped them for the trophy instead.

The Irons started the match well with Said Benrahma’s penalty opening the scoring with the side leading going into half-time. However goals from Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Eddie Nketiah completed a comfortable second-half comeback for the Gunners.

The victory sent Arsenal seven points clear at the Premier League summit but Moyes played down their chances of winning the title, suggesting City were better placed.

“We saw Leicester City win the league so it is not to say you cannot do it,” he told Amazon Prime. “Arsenal have a good side, good players but Manchester City are waiting out there. Most people will say they are a step above others.

“Arsenal played really well,” he said. “We were 1-0 up at half-time and fortunate to be. We defended well and in the end, the goals we conceded were incredibly disappointing. You cannot fault Arsenal, they played well.

“We were on the break and Said Benrahma underhits a pass to Declan Rice. We turned the ball ourselves and Martin Odegaard should not have had the chance to get the shot away. That goal gave them a lift.”

Arsenal’s next match will be against Brighton on New Year’s Eve as they seek to maintain their gap at the top of the league. West Ham face the prospect of a home match against Brentford with the game a must-win if they are to reduce fears of Championship football next season.
