David Turnbull could spark Celtic exodus after what McAvennie has spotted

Frank McAvennie has claimed David Turnbull could be the first in a long list of Celtic midfield exits.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker said Ange Postecoglou knows his best midfield three and every other player is “fighting for a place”.

Turnbull, 23, has just under 18 months left on his contract at Parkhead after joining from Motherwell in 2020 for around £3million.

The midfielder has made 14 league appearances for the Green and Whites this season but has only started six of those fixtures.

The Scotland international has fallen down the pecking order at Parkhead following the arrivals of Matt O’Riley, Reo Hatate and Aaron Mooy and has struggled for minutes under Postecoglou.

On 1 September, the Hoops also confirmed the signing of Oliver Abildgaard on a season-long loan, pushing Turnbull further down the pecking order.

But McAvennie suggested Turnbull is not the only one who should be shown the exit door.

“He has got to get rid of some of the boys in midfield,” he told Football Insider.

“Turnbull is not going to be a regular fixture when everyone is fit.

“You have got O’Riley, Hatate, [Callum] McGregor, that is three in midfield everyone else is fighting for a place. Jota is going to be playing, so is [Liel] Abada.

“There are all sorts of players there but some of the ones that are on the fringe need to go.“

In other news, Celtic are victims of major injustice as controversial Liel Abada footage emerges – ‘no one knows the rules,’ says expert.
