Young Leicester City midfielder Will Alves has torn his ACL after a horror challenge against Wolves in the FA Youth Cup.

The 17-year-old confirmed the news in an Instagram post on Friday afternoon, and has vowed to “give everything” on his road to recovery.

Alves was playing for City under-18s against Wolves in the FA Youth Cup on Wednesday, the day after featuring for the first team against MK Dons, and was the victim of a horrendous tackle in extra time.

Wolves defender Caden Voice jumped into the air and came down on Alves’ knee, with studs up. Alves’ City teammates rushed to the scene in anger and the referee was left with no choice but to show Voice a straight red card.

Alves, an England under-18 international, made his second senior appearance for Leicester on Tuesday night, coming off the bench in the 3-0 victory over MK Dons in the Carabao Cup.

“A week full of ups and downs, devastated to announce that I have torn my ACL,” Alves wrote on Instagram. “I will give everything to get back on the pitch to do what I love the most. I’ll be back stronger.”

Manager Brendan Rodgers will be addressing the challenge and subsequent injury in his press conference this afternoon ahead of the weekend’s visit of Newcastle United.
