Who in Wisconsin will get a white Christmas? ‘Probably everybody,’ weather service says

Christmas #Christmas

It’s looking like “probably everybody” in Wisconsin will be having a white Christmas this year, according to Andy Boxell, senior meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Sullivan.

“Once you factor in the snow we’re expecting here coming up Wednesday and Thursday, probably everybody,” Boxell said. “I think we’ll be at 100%.”

What is considered a white Christmas?

It doesn’t have to be snowing on Dec. 25 to count as a white Christmas. The National Weather Service generally uses an inch or more of snow on the ground to define a white Christmas, Boxell said.

The Merriam-Webster definition of white Christmas is “a Christmas when there is snow on the ground or when it is snowing.”

When was the last time Milwaukee, other areas had a white Christmas?

Going off of Boxell’s definition and National Weather Service online climatology data, the Milwaukee area last experienced a white Christmas in 2017.

And, here’s when a handful of other spots across the state last had one:

  • Appleton: 2019

  • Madison area: 2020

  • Portage: 2017

  • Fond du Lac: 2016

  • Green Bay: 2017

  • Oshkosh: 2017

  • Two Rivers: 2017

  • Sturgeon Bay: 2019

  • Eagle River: 2021

  • La Crosse: 2020
