As the GTA responds in shock to a mass killing Sunday night, a picture emerges of the shooter — a man seemingly plagued by physical and mental illness.

Francesco Villi, 73, the gunman in the Vaughan condo killing spree, shot five people dead at a Jane Street condo building and put another victim in hospital.

The SIU said he used a semi-automatic handgun.

Villi was fatally shot by responding York Regional Police.

In a lengthy video posted to Facebook hours before the killings — but which he says was shot on Dec. 13, Villi listed the people he blamed for his illness and for his losses in an ongoing court case.

His statements are full of religious fervour and deep-seated paranoia about the people he believes conspired to hurt him and ruin his life.

Villi calls out Solmar, the company that built the Bellaria condo development where he lived, his own lawyer, and various other people who are believed to be condo board members and officers.

In the 16-minute video, he talks about these people being killers, stating, “They are murdering me in my own home for self interest and for money … they have harmed me enough for seven years.”

And he accuses people of bribing and manipulating judges.

“They want me dead. You can take this body but never this soul, this spirit … God will see me through.

“I am ready to die.”

Later in the video, he claims, “I am dying! Fix the the electrical unit under the floor!”

Villi then rails about electro-magnetic waves and hydro emissions, stating that the electrical unit beneath him causes the floor to vibrate all night and he cannot sleep. “I tremble like I have Parkinson’s.”

And he states, “I cannot change the world … God will destroy the world. God will rebuild the world.

“Very soon.”

Court documents show that four years ago, the condo corporation began an action against Villi hoping to put a stop to what was claimed to be abusive and intimidating behaviour toward the condo’s board and property managers.

Villi responded with a case against York Region Standard Condominium Corporation No. 1139, claiming that the electrical room underneath his condo and electromagnetic waves were responsible for his health woes.

The suit names Rita Camilleri, Dino Colalillo, Naveed Dada, Russell Manock, John Di Nino, and Patricia De Sario as defendants.

In 2019, a judge ordered Villi to stop communicating with all concerned except in writing — and to stop posting defaming social media posts.

He was scheduled to appear in the Newmarket Superior Court of Justice court in this ongoing case on Monday, the day after the shooting spree.

In his last video posted to Facebook, Villi said that he came to Canada with his mother when he was 17.

He worked in construction and as a general contractor, and earlier court documents related to a car accident describe various other accidents on construction jobs. Court papers list depression and insomnia among his many symptoms.

There is also mention of depression over his ex-wife.

Medical witnesses note his suicidal ideation and chronic pain syndrome — dating back 30 years — in the documents.
