British TV personality Piers Morgan was mercilessly trolled online in the wake of Argentina’s thrilling win over France in the FIFA World Cup final after he wished for Lionel Messi to lose, maintaining that Cristiano Ronaldo is the “greatest of all time,” or “GOAT.”
Ahead of the final match in Qatar, Morgan taunted Argentinian fans by saying that France would win the soccer showpiece 3-1. So there were many who were happy to taunt Morgan after Argentina triumphed 4-2 on penalties, after they were tied with France 3-3 following extra-time.
The 57-year-old TV presenter started stoking the flames a couple hours ahead of kick-off, however, when he tweeted: “The more hysterically over-confident Messi fans grow about his supposedly inevitable triumph today… the more convinced I am he’ll lose. #WorldCupFinal.”
It wasn’t looking good at half-time though as Argentina went into a 2-0 lead with goals from Messi and Angel Di Maria. Morgan then went quiet on social media for a little while.
However, he was back on Twitter with a vengeance when France began its fight back with Kylian Mbappé scoring the first of his historic hat-trick.
Piers triumphantly tweeted: “BOOOM! Here we go. Mbappe’s going to win this..”
With the final becoming one of the most epic soccer games in history, it looked like Messi had won the cup for Argentina with a late goal, however Mbappé struck again from the penalty spot to tie the game up.
Piers then wrote: “What a match. Come on France!!!!”
With the game going to penalties to decide the winner, the TV personality declared: “Greatest ever World Cup Final in the greatest ever World Cup. Utterly thrilling. What an advert for the beautiful game.”
After the winning penalty was scored by Argentina, Morgan tweeted: “BREAKING: Argentina win the World Cup on penalties. What a game. Incredible drama. Congrats to Lionel Messi & his team. Commiserations to the French who gave it everything, especially the brilliant Mbappe. Football eh.. bloody hell!”
This led to the floodgates opening on Morgan as fans were delighted that Messi achieved his soccer dream of lifting the World Cup.
One Twitter user let Morgan know: “Hey @piersmorgan LIONEL MESSI HAS COMPLETED FOOTBALL 🐐 the Goat”
Another wrote, with reference to Morgan’s bombshell interview with Ronaldo, which finished his Manchester United career: “I wonder will you ever get to interview The Greatest Player of All Time, who knows.”
A third taunted Morgan, simply writing: “Now you cry.”

Morgan didn’t seem too fazed by the onslaught he received on social media and seemed to have the last word.
He couldn’t resist one last dig at Messi fans and declare that Ronaldo is still the best ever. “Yes, I agree that settles the debate once and for all… @Cristiano is the [GOAT],” he tweeted, using an emoji of a goat in place of the acronym.
