Texas men’s basketball head coach Chris Beard was arrested for assault on a family member early Monday morning. The Travis County Sheriff’s Office website says that Beard was booked at 4:18 a.m. on Monday.

A statement from a University of Texas spokesperson says “the University is aware of the situation regarding Chris Beard. We are continuing to gather information and monitoring the legal process.”

An Austin police spokesperson told the Austin American-Statesman that Beard, 49, strangled someone inside a home in Tarrytown, TX. Officers responded to a 911 call around 2:07 a.m. on Monday morning.

After five seasons at Texas Tech, Beard bolted to become the head coach of the Texas Longhorns, his alma mater, in 2021. In two seasons at Texas, he has a 29-13 record and has led the Longhorns to a 7-1 start this season with wins over three ranked teams in Gonzaga, Arkansas and Creighton.

Texas is set to play Rice at the Moody Center tonight at 7 p.m. The Longhorns are scheduled to face Stanford on Sunday at American Airlines Center in Dallas.
