Bethesda Director Todd Howard has provided an interesting update about the genre of the upcoming Indiana Jones game. The title was originally teased by Howard last year, and since then there’s been much speculation about what the game will entail. The Indiana Jones game is being made by Bethesda subsidiary MachineGames, with Howard serving as Executive Producer.

First pitched in 2009, the Indiana Jones game has been a long time coming for Bethesda, with Todd Howard providing an update on the title in a recent episode of the Lex Fridman podcast (via Video Games Chronicle). When asked if the game would have an adventure slant to it, Howard responded that it will be “a mash-up,” adding that “it isn’t one thing intentionally, so it does a lot of different things.” Howard claims to be a big fan of the Indiana Jones series, and also stated that the game will be “a definite love letter to Indiana Jones.”

There was already very little given away about Bethesda’s upcoming Indiana Jones game in its initial trailer, showing a simple pan across Jones’ desk that featured classic items like his hat and whip. Fans have had many questions about the title, like if Harrison Ford will join the Indiana Jones game to voice his character, and what the general gameplay and plot will be like. With such a brief and mysterious teaser trailer, fans had very little to go on, and now Todd Howard’s comments have raised more questions than they’ve answered.

Many fans assumed a game centered around Indiana Jones would have an action-adventure gameplay style, but Howard’s statements about the game being multi-genre have thrown that perception for a loop. There are some things it’s fairly safe to assume about the title; it’s known that it will feature a completely original story about Jones, and the trope of temples and traps in the Indiana Jones series means there will likely be some puzzles to solve, and perhaps dungeon crawling elements as well. It’s also been reported that the Indiana Jones game will be Xbox-exclusive, although that doesn’t reveal anything about the title itself.

A release window for the Indiana Jones game is up in the air as well, and the title isn’t expected to come out any time soon. Bethesda has a history of long periods of time between announcement and release of games, meaning fans will likely have to wait at least a few more years to play as the legendary adventurer. Despite so much being unknown about the title, the Bethesda Indiana Jones game has a lot of potential, and fans will hopefully be able to learn more about it in the near future.
