Aaron Mooy ran himself into the ground as the Celtic midfielder starred for Australia in their 1-0 World Cup Group D win against Tunisia.

The Socceroos were looking for a big win to boost their last 16 chances, and got in front at the break through a Mitchell Duke header. It descended into a scrappy game and Graham Arnold’s side dug out a precious win. Celtic midfielder Mooy, Dundee United’s Aziz Behich and Hearts’ Kye Rowles started, while former Ross County pair Jackson Irving and Harry Souttar also were in the starting XI, with St Mirren’s Keanu Baccus coming off the bench.

Their final group game will come against Denmark on Wednesday and it presents a chance to reach the knockout stages of the tournament in Qatar. Mooy covered every blade of grass as Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou’s ‘we never stop’ mantra was taken abroad by his experienced midfielder, with pundit Danny Murphy wowed on BBC commentary by his work on and off the ball.

He said: “He’s been brilliant for them. Both parts of his game. There’s the technical part of his game which he does so well. Then there’s the reading of the game, anticipation of danger.”

One fan said Mooy ‘has been superb in this game, he’s been everywhere’ as others labelled him ‘immense’ amongst other superlatives.

Postecoglou brought the player he worked with while manager of Australia to Celtic in the summer from Shanghai Port and so far he’s made 20 appearances.
