England’s Phil Foden has a rather unusual hobby that helps him rest his legs and have some downtime off the pitch – he’s even skipped Premier League celebrations for it

When footballers aren’t playing on the pitch, many of them are kicking back and relaxing on luxurious holidays, in private and secluded mansions or travelling the world with their partners and families. Lots of famous players are known for having unusual hobbies in their spare time, like Cristiano Ronaldo ‘s love for playing bingo and Petr Čech ‘s passion for drumming.

But Phil Foden ‘s uncommon pastime really sets him aside from the other 2022 World Cup stars – and he’s openly said “probably about 95 percent of the football lads don’t enjoy it”. The England midfielder loves to go fishing, and he’s even missed the City players’ 2018 Premier League title celebrations for a pre-planned fishing trip with his dad.

In an interview with Manchester City, Foden said: “The odd one likes fishing, so when people find out they say: ‘What a weird sport to enjoy’. They don’t understand why you enjoy it.

“I think it’s the perfect hobby to rest your legs and have some down time.”

It was his dad who sparked a passion for fishing, and at the age of six, Foden caught his biggest catch to date – a 130lb Catfish.

Now, the 22-year-old often travels to lakes around the UK and occasionally in Spain, always with his old man.

He says it’s the “buzz that makes you want to go again” but also enjoys relaxing and having quality time with his dad.

Foden likes to spend his days off fishing and has picked up tactics over the years, like knowing which spots to fish and fishing at different lengths.

But when the City star isn’t passing the ball or reeling a fishing rod, he’s spending time with his partner and two young kids at home.

Foden is in a relationship with his childhood sweetheart, Rebecca Cooke, who is thought to be the same age and from Stockport.

Their long-term relationship has been kept fairly private over the years and she has opted to not make her social media pages public.

The couple currently live with each other in a £2 million mansion in the affluent Bramhall area of Manchester, as well as Foden’s parents.

The Man City player bought the house at the age of 18, after making his Premier League breakthrough and becoming the youngest footballer to ever receive the Premier League winner’s medal.

It was also the year he became a father to son Ronnie – and says his whole life changed in the moment he was born.

In April 2021, the pair announced they were expecting their second child and went on to have a baby girl last year.
