Borje Salming #BorjeSalming
Retired Detroit Red Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom is among the many who are mourning the loss of Swedish great Borje Salming. He died Thursday from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).
Salming made an emotional appearance recently at the Hall of Fame game in Toronto. He was diagnosed in August and his health declined rapidly.
“It was very heavy and with great sadness that I received the news that Börje fell asleep today,” Lidstrom told the Aftonbladet media outlet. “He has meant so much to me personally but even more to Swedish hockey. (Borje) was one of the first to pave the way for us Swedes in the NHL in his way of playing. He was an amazing person, so caring, so humble, so warm. He will forever be missed.”
Salming was among the first Swedes to play in the NHL. He took much physical abuse to prove he could play in the league.
The NHL lost Guy Lafleur and Mike Bossy earlier in the year. It’s been a tough year for the NHL.
