England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford dropped to his knees too soon after thinking Harry Maguire had scored a header, only to see his celebrations cut short when it hit the post.

The Three Lions got themselves off to a dream start with a brace from Bukayo Saka, Jude Bellingham, Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish to make it 6-2 in the second-half.

Bellingham opened the scoring in the 35th minute of the match as he headed home a Luke Shaw cross into the top corner.

Maguire could have opened the scoring when he headed an effort off the post from a corner

However, just moments before the opening goal Manchester United defender Maguire came close to scoring as he rocketed a header off the post from an in swinging corner from Kieran Trippier.

Most perhaps thought the ball was going to drop into the top corner and one of those was goalkeeper Pickford.

The Everton shot-stopper prematurely raised his arms in celebration and began to drop to his knees after the ball left Maguire’s head, but his effort instead hit the post.

Thankfully, Pickford could celebrate properly five minutes later when Bellingham scored, and then twice more before half-time thanks to Saka and Sterling.

The Three Lions made it 4-0 early in the second-half as Arsenal attacker Saka grabbed his second of the match.

Iran did pull one back as Porto striker Mehdi Taremi found the back of the net for Iran just minutes after Saka’s second.

Any hope of a fight back was short lived as substitute Marcus Rashford came off the bench and fired home to make it 5-1 in the 71st minute of the Group B clash.

Jack Grealish also joined in on the act to make it 6-1 in the final stages of the Three Lions World Cup opener.
