Miami Marlins SP Sandy Alcántara is the 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner.

On Wednesday, Alcántara was named the unanimous winner, becoming the first pitcher to win the Cy Young in the franchise’s 29-year history.

Alcántara finished first in the NL in complete games (six), innings pitched (228.2), and second in ERA (2.28). Per ESPN Stats and Info, Alcántara’s 2.28 ERA in 2022 is second only to Kevin Brown (1.89 ERA, 1996) in Marlins’ history.

The Marlins’ ace received all 30 first-place votes, with Atlanta Braves Max Fried (10 second-place votes, seven third-place votes) and Los Angeles Dodgers Julio Urias (seven second-place votes, nine third-place votes) rounding out the top three.

According to ESPN’s Sarah Langs, Alcántara is only the 10th unanimous Cy Young winner and the first since Shane Bieber in 2020.

Alcántara is the third Dominican-born pitcher to win the Cy Young, joining Bartolo Colon (2005) and Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez (1997, 1999, 2000).

The Cy Young announcement was made live on MLB Network by Martinez, making the moment even more unforgettable for Alcántara as he sat at home surrounded by family and friends.

“It’s something I will never forget,” Alcántara said. “I feel so special right now. I hope that it will be special for my country, for my team, and for everybody here.”

When asked if he could repeat the Cy Young feat in 2023, he responded confidently, “Hell yeah.”
