Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds confirmed on The Tonight Show that he is trying to buy NHL hockey team the Ottawa Senators.

“Yes, that is true,” he responded when the show’s host, comedian Jimmy Fallon, asked if the rumours he wanted to buy the team were accurate.

“It’s very expensive,” Reynolds added. “I need a partner with really deep pockets. It’s called a consortium … when you form a group together to buy an entity. It’s such a fancy way of saying I need a sugar mommy or a sugar daddy.”

The Deadpool star is from Vancouver, but he also grew up in Ottawa’s Vanier neighbourhood. As a Canadian, he explained to Fallon how hockey is part of his DNA.

“Children are eased out of the womb in ice skates,” he said.

Earlier this week, People Magazine reported that it was important to Reynolds to keep the team in Ottawa, “as a sale could result in relocation.”

This isn’t the first sports team that has caught Reynolds’ eye. In 2020, he bought a U.K. football club in North Wales, Wrexham AFC, along with partner and fellow actor Rob McElhenny.

The same year, Reynolds sold his gin company Aviation American for $610 million. And that’s not all. Reynolds is on the board of the Match Group, which owns dating sites and apps like match.com, Tinder and OKCupid. He is also an owner of mobile company Mint Mobile.

“While every other tech titan is off chasing rockets, I’ll corner the budget-friendly wireless sector. Like most people, I only use rockets 10-12 times a year but I use my mobile service every day,” said Reynolds in a statement on Mint’s website.

And if buying the Ottawa Senators doesn’t work out, Reynolds joked that he has another plan.

“I’ll buy a U.S. senator, which anyone can afford,” he said.
