Arsenal pay their first visit of 2022/23 to a team who finished above them in the Premier League last season when they travel to Chelsea in their penultimate top-flight fixture before the 2022 World Cup.

While Chelsea are reeling from a comprehensive first defeat of new manager Graham Potter’s reign in their 4-1 thrashing at Brighton and Hove Albion, the table-topping Gunners have won twice since then, hammering Nottingham Forest 5-0 and beating Zurich to win their Europa League group.

A meeting with the team they have met more than any other — 205 times — is the first of three tricky fixtures for Chelsea, who go to Manchester City in the EFL Cup on Wednesday and are at Newcastle United next Saturday in their final match before the World Cup in Qatar.

The Sporting News is providing live commentary from the match at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea vs Arsenal live commentary, highlights

68 mins – Chelsea 0-1 Arsenal: Saka fizzes a shot high and wide of the target from inside the penalty area on the right.

He was under pressure from Cucurella but Arteta has his head in his hands, feeling that the youngster should have been more accurate there. A second goal for Arsenal would all-but finish this contest.

66 mins – Chelsea 0-1 Arsenal:

65 mins – Chelsea 0-1 Arsenal: Former Arsenal top scorer Aubameyang can’t do anything to help his side hit back now.

He’s got a pensive look on his face as he sits on the bench, having been supplanted by Broja. Conor Gallagher has also come on.

64 mins – Chelsea 0-1 Arsenal: Saka’s cross from the right following the corner goes through a crowd of players in the goalmouth. Gabriel appears to take the last touch on the line, stabbing the ball into the roof of the net!

Not exactly watertight defending from the hosts. Arsenal have dominated possession – and now they have a goal to match as Saka and Gabriel race away towards the corner flag to celebrate.

63 mins – GOAL: Chelsea 0-1 Arsenal: Arsenal have the lead from the corner!

62 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Saka sends Jesus away inside the penalty area on the right. From a tight angle, he shoots at Mendy, who’s narrowed the gap at his near post and palms away. Corner.

61 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Armando Broja is preparing to replace Aubameyang. Martinelli swings a first-time volley awry inside the penalty area on the left.

60 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Mount has space outside the Arsenal penalty area but can’t pick a pass. Then Chalobah is booked after being sold short by a pass, bringing Jesus down.

59 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Back on with it. Thiago Silva belies his experience and characteristic composure by playing a hospital pass to Azpilicueta via a ball launched high into the sky inside his own penalty area.

Chelsea eventually clear but they could do without any more of those.

57 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: There’s a break in play because something has happened in the crowd. Both sets of players head to their technical areas to receive instructions.

56 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: It’s not often you see a short corner routine work, but this one does from Arsenal’s right.

Martinelli charges into the penalty area and lifts a cross into the goalmouth, where Partey heads wide. This remains a really difficult game to call.

55 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Arsenal are off down the other end for a good spell of pressure, spreading play quickly from left to right.

Martinelli hangs a cross towards the centre of the six yard box, where Mendy punches clear.

54 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: The unlikely defensive figure of Gabriel Jesus wins his header to stop Chelsea from capitalising on the freekick. Ramsdale gathers the ball from the ensuing attack.

53 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Partey shoulders Loftus-Cheek to the floor after the Chelsea livewire sets off on a rapid run down the right, conceding a freekick near the edge of the penalty area.

52 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Chelsea win a throw-in inside Arsenal territory on the left following a bit of a break while Azpilicueta said his piece to Oliver and Martinelli had some TLC from Arsenal’s physio.

50 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Chelsea can’t do much with the opportunity and wind up with their captain in the book.

Azpilicueta charges in studs-up as he tries to win a ball on Arsenal’s left. Martinelli is the man on the receiving end, needing treatment on the floor.

It’s a painful one for the midfielder but there will probably be some debate over whether that was worthy of a yellow card. The phrase “there to be won” springs to mind.

49 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Saliba and Zinchenko struggle with a high ball on the fringes of the Arsenal penalty area. Aubameyang pounces and tries to release Sterling. Chelsea win a corner on the left.

48 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Arsenal can’t profit from Saka’s corner. They continue to be on top, having had almost 72 percent of possession during the closing 15 minutes of the first half.

47 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Odegaard whips the freekick towards the near post, where Thiago Silva heads the danger behind.

46 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: We’re back! Any Chelsea fans who rushed back from the halftime queues might wish they hadn’t bothered, though, as Arsenal immediately win a freekick in a useful position on the right.

HALFTIME – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: The corner comes to nothing and the whistle blows! No huge chances apart from that header Jesus should have had on target, but plenty of action at either end.

This is the first time Arsenal have been drawing 0-0 at halftime since they hosted Fulham in August. The Gunners have now stopped the opposition from scoring a first-half goal in 10 of their 13 games – only Newcastle United (11) have done so more often this season.

45 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: We’ll have a minute of added time here. Martinelli shows his skilful control by keeping the ball in on the left-hand touchline and winning a corner on the left off Azpilicueta.

43 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: That petty foul means that Saka has been booked in two of his last three Premier League appearances – as many as in his previous 18 in the competition. Hopefully he’s getting that kind of silliness out of his system before the World Cup, because it’s beneath a player of his talent.

42 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Both managers indulge in some amateur dramatics after Saka engages in a classic case of making up for missing out on a freekick by weighing in with a foul.

Arteta, as you might expect, is sure his man was fouled by Cucurella. Then Saka responds by treading on his fellow wideman’s foot after unsuccessfully appealing for action to be taken.

40 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Mendy claims a cross from the left, then Ramsdale sends the ball out of play. Chelsea supporters show their satisfaction at both incidents.

38 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Arsenal fans are serenading William Saliba to the tune of ‘Tequila’ by The Champs.

36 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Chelsea can’t clear their lines from the corner, eventually allowing Saka a second attempt at a cross from outside the penalty area on the right. Loftus-Cheek correctly lets it go, sailing behind for a goalkick.

35 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Xhaka has a go from distance, winning Arsenal a corner on the right. Saka places the ball down.

34 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Havertz is grimacing after failing to make the most of a good opportunity. Sterling found him inside the penalty area on the right with a silky pass, only for the resulting cross-shot to be gathered by the grateful Ramsdale.

33 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: It’s a decent delivery from Mount from the corner, finding Thiago Silva, who can only thud a head well over the crossbar. The defender thinks he’s been fouled by Partey, who didn’t know much about it but probably wasn’t in the wrong.

32 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Havertz canters down the left and wins a corner off Saliba as he enters the penalty area. Mount will take it.

31 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Thiago Silva is adjudged to have taken out Odegaard with a challenge from behind. There’s very little in it. Chelsea fans boo Michael Oliver’s decision.

30 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Saliba expertly intervenes to stop a delivery from locating Aubameyang.

28 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Best chance of the game! Martinelli cuts inside from the left, approaches the penalty area and curls an inswinging cross onto the head of Jesus, who’s unmarked.

The number nine dives in and should hit the target, only diverting his effort well wide of the far post. Arteta turns and does an air kick in his technical area. Good stuff from Arsenal, though.

27 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: White writhes in pain after a mess of a tackle by Aubameyang, who picks up the first booking of the game following some histrionics by Arteta.

“Mikel Arteta – he thinks that you’re ****,” sing the Arsenal fans, reflecting their boss’s decision to strip Aubameyang of the Arsenal captaincy and sell him.

26 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal

25 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Freekick to Chelsea outside the penalty area on the left. Cucurella swings it towards the six yard box, where Arsenal clear at the second attempt through a Xhaka header.

24 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Cucurella has a throw deep inside Arsenal territory on the left, exchanges a one-two with Havertz and then gives the ball away. The fullback was dropped for a sloppy performance and hasn’t been entirely convincing today.

22 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Stat attack, while it’s gone quieter again: Each of Arsenal’s last six Premier League goals against Chelsea have been scored by English players, with Saka, Emile Smith Rowe and Eddie Nketiah each netting twice.

21 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Havertz tries to shrug Saliba off the ball and comes off second best, conceding a foul inside Arsenal territory.

20 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: The game bursts back into life with roar-raising chances at both ends! Jesus tricks his way inside the penalty area from the left, sitting at least two markers down before powering in a drive that the wily Thiago Silva thwarts.

Chelsea charge down the other end, where Mount squares a low pass to Havertz, whose shot from the edge of the box is also blocked.

19 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Foul throw alert! The ball slips out of Zinchenko’s hands as the returning fullback tries to take a throw-in on the left. Loud cheers from the Chelsea fans.

Almost reassuring to know that Premier League footballers can make mortifying mistakes from the simplest of positions too.

18 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: White finds Martinelli outside the Chelsea penalty area on Arsenal’s left. The midfielder cuts inside with Sterling applying precious little pressure, then swings a shot high and wide of the far post.

17 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Saka flights the cross from the freekick towards the far post, where Havertz is tracking Saliba and sees the danger behind.

16 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Jesus ends up face down in the turf after being clumped in the back of a heel by Cucurella midway inside Chelsea territory on Arsenal’s right.

14 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: It’s quietened down a bit now after that bright start by Arsenal.

13 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: White’s two shots in 10 minutes are as many as he’d had in his previous 12 league games this season.

“Champions of Europe – you’ll never sing that,” comes the predictable chant from the home fans.

12 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Sterling lifts a cross from the right towards the middle of the Arsenal six yard box, where White does well to head the danger away. Xhaka then shows commendable coolness to guide possession back to Ramsdale after Chelsea again attempt to cause chaos with a delivery.

More encouraging for the hosts, although they’ve been on the back foot for most of the game so far.

10 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Arsenal are back at it on the left, working the ball across to White, who’s again on the edge of the penalty area on the right.

White comes closer to finding the target this time, but his effort still leaves plenty to be desired, bouncing down into the turf and clear of the far post.

9 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Potter half-squats in frustration after a howler of a cross from Havertz, who’d been sent away down the right by Mendy in Chelsea’s first attack.

The Germany midfielder had so much space inside the penalty area and Sterling waiting at the far post, but fizzed a first-time cross out for a throw-in.

8 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Chelsea head Odegaard’s delivery from the freekick away. It drops to White on the edge of the box to the right of centre, who lashes a dreadful shot high over the crossbar.

You’d call that a defender’s shot, if White wasn’t such an all-rounder.

7 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Mount and Loftus-Cheek combine to clear the danger, only for Arsenal to mount another attack down the left. Xhaka wins a freekick beyond the midway point of Chelsea territory after a clumsy challenge by Havertz.

6 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Martinelli tries to whip the corner in. Havertz heads it away for a throw-in on the left. Partey wipes the ball again. Potter may be concerned by the amount of pressure his team are chasing.

5 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Chelsea are back under the cosh. Arsenal win a corner on their right off Azpilicueta.

4 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: That’s as bad a freekick as we’re likely to see today, Saka trying to square a short pass to Odegaard outside the penalty area.

Cucurella nicks possession, making up for the indiscretion that led to the set piece, and is fouled as he tries to race away.

3 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Arsenal are having the better of the early stages. Zinchenko sends Saka away on the right with a perceptive pass, and Cucurella takes him down just outside the penalty area. This is a really useful opportunity for the visitors just beyond the edge of the box. Saka lines it up.

2 mins – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Arsenal win a throw-in almost level with the Chelsea penalty area on their left almost immediately from kickoff.

Partey uses a towel to wipe the ball and launches a delivery towards Jesus inside the box, whose flick provides an easy take for Mendy.

1 min – Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal: Arsenal, attacking from left to right, start us off as Mikel Arteta takes charge of his 150th game in charge. It’s not tipping it down, as it was earlier, but there are a few hoods up on the benches.

5 mins to KO: The teams are in the tunnel! Mateo Kovacic has just shared a handshake with Martin Odegaard. The players are about to emerge.

40 mins to KO: And here’s how Arsenal assemble…

45 mins to KO: Team news! Here’s how Chelsea start…

1 hour to KO: Chelsea striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored 68 goals in 128 Premier League games for Arsenal between 2018 and 2021, including one against the Blues in December 2019 – he could become just the second player to score for both sides in this fixture in the Premier League (excluding own goals), after Cesc Fàbregas.

1 hour 15 minutes to KO: Chelsea have checked in! They’re unbeaten in 12 home matches in all competitions since losing 4-2 to Arsenal on 20 April, winning seven of those games.

1 hour 30 minutes to KO: Danger, danger – it’s Gabriel Jesus making Arsenal much more active in the box. He’s had more touches in the opposition penalty area than any other player in the Premier League this season, racking up 124 at an average of 10.7 every 90 minutes.

Arsenal’s leading player for us in the danger zone last season managed just 7.7.

1 hour 45 minutes to KO: That said, Arsenal have won their last two Premier League away matches vs. Chelsea, including a 4-2 victory here last season thanks to goals from Emile Smith-Rowe, Bukayo Saka and a brace from Eddie Nketiah.

That means that this afternoon, the visitors will be looking to record three successive away wins against the Blues for the first time since 1974!

2 hours to KO: The biggest and perhaps simplest question today; can Arsenal win against their fierce rivals to go back top of the Premier League?

The Gunners have been in fantastic form so far this campaign, of which manager Mikel Arteta deserves much of the plaudits, but heading to Stamford Bridge could prove their toughest challenge of the season so far potentially, especially given their previous overall pretty poor form at this ground.

3 hours to KO: Hello, and welcome to today’s live coverage of Chelsea vs Arsenal — a potentially significant London derby in this season’s Premier League title race, and one that comes just two weeks before the start of the World Cup in Qatar.

Chelsea vs Arsenal lineups

Chelsea suffered another high-profile defensive casualty in their 2-1 win at home to Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday when full-back Ben Chilwell sustained a hamstring injury that could keep him out of England’s World Cup squad.

Reece James and Wesley Fofana are already out of contention at the back with knee problems, while goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga is out with a foot issue. Mateo Kovacic is a doubt because of a calf injury and N’Golo Kante is not expected to return until 2023.

Chelsea predicted lineup (4-2-3-1): Mendy (GK) — Cucurella, Koulibaly, Chalobah, Azpilicueta  — Zakaria, Jorginho — Mount, Havertz, Sterling — Aubameyang

Arsenal’s Takehiro Tomiyasu (muscle) was helped off in the 1-0 victory against Zurich on Thursday and did not return against Chelsea.

Manager Mikel Arteta made seven changes to his initial lineup from that game, with Oleksandr Zinchenko among those starting.

Arsenal lineup (4-3-3): Ramsdale (GK) — White, Gabriel, Saliba, Zinchenko — Partey, Odegaard, Xhaka — Saka, Jesus, Martinelli.

Chelsea vs Arsenal betting odds, prediction

Chelsea are narrow favourites to beat Arsenal. The Blues would have won four in a row at home in all competitions but for Casemiro’s 94th-minute equaliser for Manchester United on October 22.

Arsenal have won all of their past four games against London clubs, scoring 10 times and conceding only twice. The second-highest scorers in the Premier League won 4-2 at Chelsea in April, and bets on both teams to find the net are likely to be popular given that the hosts have scored in each of their past 21 games at Stamford Bridge.

Prediction: Unbeaten at home this season, Chelsea should be smarting from that result at Brighton against an Arsenal side who have proven their title credentials by rising to the challenge in their early encounters with teams tipped to finish ahead of them. This could be an entertaining 2-2 draw.
