McManus suggests the real reason Celtic signed Aaron Mooy – ‘a lot of the fans agree…’

Mooy #Mooy

Ange Postecoglou brought Aaron Mooy to Celtic as a “favour to his fellow countryman”.

That’s according to former Hibernian striker Tam McManus, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the midfielder’s performances this season.

Mooy, 32, signed for Celtic on a two-year deal in the summer of 2022.

Initally arriving as a backup option, the Austalia international has now been handed three successive Premiership starts following an injury to Callum McGregor.

However, McManus insists the midfielder does not fit in with how Postecoglou wants to play.

“I’m not sure on Aaron Mooy,” McManus told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.

“I’m sure he’s a good footballer but I’m not sure he fits in with Celtic’s ethos or the way they want to play with that high press.

“Celtic like to get after teams and that’s not Mooy’s game. You bring him off the bench and he keeps the ball, he keeps everything ticking over.

“There is a World Cup coming up and I think Ange was just doing his fellow countryman a favour by trying to get him fit.

“He is a good footballer but I’m just not sure he fits in at Celtic and I think a lot of the fans would agree with that.

“He’s good but not good enough to start.”

Celtic

Mooy has now made 18 appearances for Celtic in all competitions, failing to score but registering three assists.

The midfielder has 53 Australia caps to his name with five of those appearances coming during 2022.
