Noel Whelan has claimed Leandro Trossard could force through a move to Newcastle United in January as he looks to go to “the next level”.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 27-year-old can be “one of the best wingers in the Premier League”.

Trossard, who has notched six goals and two assists in the top flight this season, is out of contract in June 2023 – but Brighton have the opportunity to extend his deal for a further 12 months.

Newcastle

According to 90min (17 October), former Brighton chief Dan Ashworth is keen to reunite with the Belgium international as Newcastle target a cut-price January deal.

The report claims Graham Potter’s Chelsea are also interested in his services.

Whelan suggested “many clubs” could enter the race for his signature with Trossard “in the driving seat” regarding his future.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “He’s been putting in really solid performances, not just this season, but over the past few years now.

“He’s just excelled and gone up to that next level – we’ve seen that against Man City and Liverpool.

“He can potentially be one of the best wingers in the Premier League if he can keep coming up with the goods.

“Trossard is in a very strong position. He has been at Brighton a long time, he’s been professional – but now he’s in the driving seat to force a move.

Newcastle

“It wouldn’t surprise me if he wanted to go to that next level in January. He’ll want a club who are going to challenge at the top.

“Newcastle fit those criteria, but they’ll be many clubs in for him on current form.”
