Dusty Baker backs Justin Verlander’s career longevity goal

Justin Verlander isn’t looking to hang it up anytime soon after the 2022 season. 

The Houston Astros ace has amassed more than 3,000 career innings over the last 17 seasons, yet Game 1 of the World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies is anything but a swan song for the 39-year-old hurler. Verlander has stated in recent years his goal to pitch until he is 45.

On Friday, Astros manager Dusty Baker gave him a vote of confidence—referencing Warren Spahn, Jim Kaat and another Hall of Famer.

“I don’t see why not,” Baker said. “Everybody keeps talking about 39. … Satchel Paige was 60-something when I played with him in Atlanta. It all depends on your body type. It depends on your desire to win.”

It’s easy to see why Baker has such confidence in the leader of Houston’s staff. Verlander is a nine-time All-Star and two-time Cy Young winner, and he’s likely to add more hardware in 2022. Verlander led the American League in ERA this season, posting a 1.75 mark in 175 innings. 

Verlander still has one thing missing on his career resume entering Friday night: a World Series victory. The veteran righthander is no stranger to the postseason with 197 2/3 innings, though his World Series experience to date is a number of near misses. He has an 0–6 record in the Fall Classic, paired alongside a 5.68 ERA. 

Baker seemed unconcerned by Verlander’s World Series struggles when speaking with the media ahead of Game 1. After another sterling season, the aging ace has earned the confidence of his manager. 

“I wouldn’t put anything past Verlander,” Baker said. 

Verlander will take the hill in Game 1 at Minute Maid Park as he squares off against Aaron Nola. First pitch is slated for 7:03 p.m. CT.
