Zack Greinke explains he wasn’t signaling pitch he was about to throw before A’s home run

Although Zack Greinke has actually called the pitch he was going to throw earlier in the year, the Houston Astros pitcher didn’t do it before Oakland A’s outfielder Ramon Laureano hit a dinger off of him.

Greinke threw up two fingers to his catcher Martin Maldonado on Thursday in the Astros’ Game 4 ALDS win over the A’s, and everyone thought it was his way of telling Maldonado he was throwing a curveball.

Some pros pointed out that he wasn’t telling Maldonado (and, in effect, Laureano) the pitch, and they were of course correct. It turned out he was asking for which sequence of signs they were using.

The 36-year-old Greinke said the reality was far more routine. He was merely telling Astros catcher Martín Maldonado which intricate set of hand signals they should use to call pitches with an A’s baserunner on second base.

“That’s just what I’ve been doing this year for the most part. I just switched the pitch so it doesn’t waste time,” Greinke said after Houston won the division series in four games and advance to the AL Championship Series.

There you have it. And now you know what you’re seeing when Greinke inevitably does it in the ALCS.
