NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — A good Samaritan was stabbed as he tried to break up a fight between two women on a subway train near City Hall on Wednesday morning, police said.

The 31-year-old victim was on a southbound 4 train approaching the Brooklyn Bridge–City Hall station in Lower Manhattan just before 6 a.m. when two women got into a fight on the train.

As the man attempted to intervene, one of the women pulled out a knife and stabbed him in the back, police said.

The victim was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue in stable condition.

The two women fled the train. No arrests had been reported as of Wednesday morning.

A police investigation impacted service on 4, 5 and 6 trains during the morning rush.

The stabbing was just the latest in a series of transit attacks to make headlines in recent weeks. They include fatal stabbings at a Bronx station and on a Brooklyn train, as well as a fight at a Queens station that led to a man being run over and killed by a train.

Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams announced a plan last weekend to increase the presence of police officers in the transit system in an effort to put weary riders at ease.

The new plan—dubbed “Cops, Cameras, and Care”—includes an additional 1,200 police overtime shifts in the subway each day, with the state helping to foot the bill. Cameras are also being installed in subway cars, an ongoing effort that was previously announced.
