North San Jose house fire kills one, injures three

A north San Jose three-alarm house fire early Tuesday morning left one person dead and injured three, including a firefighter, according to the San Jose Fire Department.
Authorities received reports of a fire on the 3000 block of Via Montez, near Morrill Middle School, at 3:31 a.m. While en route to the scene, firefighters learned that the entire first floor of the home was engulfed by flames, and that a person was stuck on the home’s second floor.
About 3:50 a.m., a firefighter fell through a balcony in an attempt to reach the person on the second floor. The firefighter was taken to a hospital but was expected to recover from their injuries, SJFD spokeswoman Erica Ray told the Bay Area News Group.
A total of five residents were at the home at the time of the fire. One person was later found deceased on the second floor, according to SJFD. Two others were transported to hospitals with minor injuries.
The identity of the person killed in the fire will be released publicly once it is confirmed and their next of kin are notified.
SJFD officials said the cause of the fire is under investigation. There was no damage estimate immediately available.
