By India Today Web Desk: Aaron Finch admitted that Australia were completely outplayed in their T20 World Cup Super 12 match against Kane Williamson’s New Zealand at the Sydney Cricket Ground. On Saturday, October 22, the Aussies lost to the Black Caps by 89 runs and didn’t get off to the best of starts in the mega event.

After being asked to chase down 201, the hosts were bowled out for 110 in 17.1 overs. Devon Conway, Tim Southee and Mitchell Santner combined to hand Australia the massive defeat.

Conway scored an unbeaten 92, after which Santner and Southee picked up three wickets apiece. Apart from the trio, Finn Allen and James Neesham also played handy knocks.

Finch said that once Conway and Allen got the Black Caps off to a flier, the Aussies failed to get a foothold back into the contest.

“They certainly did (on the New Zealand openers), they set the tone in the first 4 overs and we didn’t recover. Needed a big start, that didn’t happen and we were outplayed completely,” Finch was quoted as saying in the post-match presentation ceremony.

“He got off to a flier (on Finn), we needed early wickets, which didn’t happen and when we chased, we lost too many wickets, we weren’t good enough with the net run-rate taking a bad hit. We play Sri Lanka next, four games left, need to win everything and have some luck on our side,” he added.

Glenn Maxwell scored 28 runs off 20 balls with three fours and one six, but apart from that, none of the Australian players managed to step up. Josh Hazlewood picked up two wickets, but leaked runs at an economy rate of 10.25.

Australia’s second Super 12 match against Sri Lanka is on Tuesday, October 25 at the Perth Stadium.
