The fly trends on Twitter after landing on Vice President Mike Pence during debate

Wednesday’s debate featured not only Vice President Mike Pence and Democratic Vice Presidential nominee Kamala Harris on the stage, but also an uninvited visitor who did not adhere to recommended social distancing.

Near the end of the debate, a fly landed on the vice president’s head and remained there for more than two minutes. Pence did not react and remained engaged in the debate while it captivated viewers.

“The Fly” was a top trending term on Twitter before the debate ended, with more than 400,000 tweets shared containing the term during the event.

Some shared photos of the fly while it rested on the vice president’s head. Others alleged political motives on behalf of the insect. Many shared memes.

A Twitter account was created before the end of the debate with the handle “@MikePenceFly___” It garnered more than 11,000 followers in minutes.

On the topic of who won the debate, some argued it was the fly.

Others argued its motives were political.

The Biden campaign pounced on the moment. Sharing a photo of former Vice President Joe Biden holding a fly swatter, voters were encouraged to “Pitch in $5 to help this campaign fly.” The campaign offered a “Truth Over Flies Fly Swatter” for $10.

Quickly after the debate, the Biden campaign also shared the url “flywillvote.com” which redirects to “iwillvote.com” where voters can check their voter registration status.
