What Game of Thrones’ Westeros Would Look Like on Google Maps

An artist has imagined the continent of Westeros from Game of Thrones as a Google Maps rendering. Game of Thrones, which ran for 8 seasons between 2011 and 2019, is a big-budget HBO fantasy series based on the novel series known collectively as A Song of Ice and Fire written by George R. R. Martin. The novels and the show both follow the various factions fighting for control of the Iron Throne after the death of Westeros’ most recent king. This year, the franchise expanded even more with the debut of House of the Dragon, a prequel series following the fall of the Targaryen family.
While the world of Game of Thrones is technically called The Known World, the bulk of the action in both series takes place on the continent of Westeros. Westeros includes many different regions, including the Crownlands on the east coast, where the Iron Throne resides in the capital city of King’s Landing. One of the other key lands in Westeros is Winterfell, the northern land ruled by House Stark. This house has provided many of the series’ longest-running protagonists, including the young but deadly Arya (Maisie Williams), the Night’s Watch commander Jon Snow (Kit Harington), and Sansa (Sophie Turner), who was betrothed to the wicked Prince Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson).

The fan account House of the Dragon Source shared a reimagining of the map of Westeros as it would look rendered by the Google Maps app. The image was shared without a credited artist, though it seems to match a work that was credited previously to Reddit user selvag. The image shows the entire vertical stretch of Westeros, all the way from The Lands of Always Winter at its northernmost point and The Summer Sea at the south.
This map really puts into perspective how far people need to travel in order to cross Westeros throughout the series. It also implies just how large The Known World is overall. For instance, Emilia Clarke’s character Daenerys Targaryen travels for an incredibly long time before even reaching Westeros. The series highlighted how difficult it is to travel across Westeros, often taking multiple episodes to reach a destination.
With so much ground to cover in Game of Thrones, it makes sense why the franchise has proved so fertile until now. Every House and every region has its own story to tell. Considering House of the Dragon season 1’s immense success, it’s getting more and more likely that they will indeed have the opportunity to be told.
